Number of Days: 2 Assembly Points: Bangalore River Embarkation Point: Birunani Seasons for Rafting: Jun - Oct
Coorg is a mountainous area of rice paddy valleys, forested ridges and heavy monsoon rain. Tucked away in the Southern Corner of this district on the Birunani Road some 35 km from Gonikoppa and nestled in an organic coffee plantation on the banks of The Upper Barapole we have a well equipped new base with reception, rest area, changing facilities, refreshments, toilets and hot water showers for your after trip comforts. The Upper Barapole River drains the eastern flanks of Brahmagiri Ghats. A catchment area of enormous rainfall during the south west monsoon, which provides run off into the upper stretches of the Barapole River, known as Kithu Kakathu River. Then pouring into a small gorge we get the first section of good rapids which can become rather difficult in higher water levels.
After a 4 km calm section the river then drops through several kilometres of class 3, 4 and even class 5 rapids before it enters Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary plummeting over a 120 feet falls. Needless to say we do not raft beyond this section. We run 3 stretches of this highly technical and (in high water levels) very difficult class 3 to 4 rapids. We consider this the most challenging rafting trip available for the general public in South India. Not to be missed!
