The Sahayadri range runs parallel to the western coast line of the Indian peninsula. In Maharashtra it is also known as the ‘Ghats’. The mountain range traverses four states - Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani, Lonavala and Khandala are some well known tourist destinations that lie in the Sahayadris. Some of the treks in these ranges could be as tough as the ones in the great Himalayas.
On Sundays and holidays one is likely to find many trekkers around the numerous ancient forts in the region. Monsoon (June to October) is a great time to trek up in the Sahayadris. Cascading waterfalls, rivers, lakes, streams and rivulets come alive during the rains while the hillside turns a lush green.
Tip: A major impediment while making a night stay in the rock caves or abandoned temples could be armies of bed bugs! Mosquito repellent ointments or fumes don’t work, you need a strong insect spray if you want a peaceful night’s sleep after a hard day’s trek.
