NAUKUCHIATAL

Naukuchiatal or ‘lake of nine corners’ is known for its tranquillity and for the orchards and dense jungles that surround it. The lake is fed by an underground perennial spring. This lake boasts of a good walking track around the lake, apart from boating and angling. One could also take off on a trek in the neighbouring hillside.

GETTING THERE:

By Road: If you set out early from Delhi you can reach Naukuchiatal in 7 hours. Delhi – Kathgodam is 269 kms and Naukuchiatal is another 26 kms.

By Rail: Nearest rail station is Kathgodam (35 kms south). The Ranikhet Express departs from Delhi at 11 pm and arrives in Kathgodam at 6.10 am. It departs from Kathgodam at 10.45 pm and arrives in Delhi at 4.45 am.

PLACES TO SEE:

Lake: The deep blue lake is the main attraction. One can take leisurely walks around the lake or hire the row or paddle boats for a joy-ride.

Fishing: If you like this sport, carry your own fishing rod and head for the lake which has an abundance of carp. A permit is required which can be obtained locally from the Irrigation Department.

Treks: can be organised to Jandhidhar and Jungliagaon (8 kms).

Mountain biking: There are many mountain trails where one can bike and enjoy the abundance of flora and fauna. Many varieties of wild orchids abound in the hills.

NEARBY PLACES:

Bhimtal: 4 kms from Naukuchiatal, this emerald green lake is ideal for boating and angling.

Nainital: The most pleasant hill station to visit in this area with interesting walks through the forests to points with superb views of the Himalayas.

Ranikhet:This peaceful hillstation offers excellent views of the Himalayas with several good walks.

HANDY TIPS:

  • It could be snowing in December-January, so carry heavy woollens in winter and light woollens in summer.
  • Carry mineral water or water purification tablets.
  • If you plan to go fishing or boating, wear a life jacket.
  • For avid bird-watchers, carry your binoculars.
  • Don’t litter the mountainside and do not leave fires unattended.
  • Carry a torch.
  • During winters there is fog and mist on hill roads. It is advisable to drive during the day.
  • During monsoons check the condition of the hill roads before you set out.
  • If driving top your fuel tank at Haldwani or Kathgodam.
