Hill Stations - Uttar Pradesh - Nainital

Legend has it that the rishis brought the waters of the sacred Mansarovar River to form the Naini Lake. Nainital nestles among green hills and numerous little lakes along with many temples. The views from the surrounding peaks is breath-taking and adds to Nainital’s magic. The lakes tour covers Bhowali, Ramgarh, Ghorakhal, Bhimtal Naukuchiyatal, Sat Tal and Hanumangarhi.

GETTING THERE:
By road: Delhi – Nainital takes approximately 9 hours.
By rail: Nearest rail station is Kathgodam (35 kms south). The Ranikhet Express departs from Delhi at 11 pm and arrives in Kathgodam at 6.10 am. It departs from Kathgodam at 10.45 pm and arrives in Delhi at 4.45 am.

PLACES TO SEE:

Naini Lake: is said to be one of the emerald green eyes of Shiva’s wife, Sati. One can take a circuit of the lake in a row boat or hire a small yacht by the hour, or take a pedal boat.

Naini Peak(6 kms): is the highest peak in the region. It offers a spectacular view of the valley and is a wonderful picnic spot.

Astronomical Observatory: Situated close to Hanumangarh this observatory houses very modern telescopes. It is open Monday to Saturday (10am-5pm).

Snow view(2270m): A ropeway takes one up to this point or one can hire horses or mountain ponies. One can also walk the 2km distance, but the climb is quite steep. From the top one can view the Nanda Devi peak through binoculars.

Lands End(4 kms): This point gives one the best views of Khurpa Tal. It is a wonderful walk through a forest of oak, deodar and pine.

Golf: If you fancy a spot of golf you can try the 18-hole Raj Bhawan Golf Club.

Rock climbing: The Nainital Mountaineering Club organises these courses at Bara Pattar.

Shopping: The Mall, Mallital, Tallital and Tibetan markets are the best places to shop for woollens, candles and cane sticks.

NEARBY PLACES:

Bhimtal (22 kms): this emerald green lake is ideal for boating and angling.

Naukuchiatal (26 kms): this placid lake is ideal for boating and angling.

Ramgarh(26 kms): famous for it’s fruit orchards.

Mukteshwar: a popular picnic spot with spectacular views of Trisul and Nanda Devi peaks.

Corbett National Park (63 kms): also known as “the land of the trumpet, roar and song” is home to over 50 kinds of mammals, 25 reptile species and 580 types of birds.

Almora: is a picturesque hill station and is famous for the Kasar Devi Temple where Swami Vivekananda came to meditate.

Ranikhet:This peaceful hillstation offers excellent views of the Himalayas with several good walks.

Kasauni: 51 kms north of Almora, one can get fantastic views of Trishul and Nanda Devi peaks.

HANDY TIPS:

Avoid weekend crowds and travel to Nainital during the week.
It could be snowing in December-January, so carry heavy woollens in winter and light woollens in summer.
