One of the most rugged regions in the entire Himalayan range, Ladakh is also one of the highest regions of India, with altitudes, even in the depth of the valleys, rarely falling below 3000m. The Ladakh range has the highest motorable road in the world. The stark, desolate beauty of the region holds great attraction for trekkers. The region affords spectacular views of the Zanskar and the Indus rivers thundering down narrow steep gorges, creating lasting impressions in the hearts of the beholder. Some treks also take one over small glaciers, adding to the sense of adventure. One can also get beautiful views of grasslands and poplar trees, as also of the Indus valley. Predominantly a Buddhist area, this region has important monastries, which provide a glimpse of the cultural heritage of the region.

A word of caution
The Ladakh region being the highest in India, acclimatisation is a major problem for trekkers and should not be taken lightly. Proper consideration should be given to this aspect and the initial stages of the treks should be taken very slowly. Also, this area is intensly arid and therefore dehydration is another matter of worry. Fluid levels must be maintained at all times.
