Adventure
The Garhwal Himalayas offer numerous possibilities to adventure and nature enthusiasts. The region abounds in a splendid combination of flora, fauna, rapid mountain rivers and snow-capped mountains which are magnificent enough to infuse the spirit of adventure in all. You could indulge in River running, Trekking, Mountaineering and Skiing depending on your interest. The trekkers go off the yatra trail to enjoy the scenic beauty and mountaineers start where the pilgrims finish.
In towering magnificence, these mountains offer umpteen possibilities to the initiated. There are places which have remained untouched by human devastation, where one can see the Himalayas in their regal splendour.
The mountaineering activity is concentrated in two areas – the Gangotri Glacier and the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. Expert guides and porters are available to organise expeditions.
There are numerous peaks between 6,000 and 7000 metres. You can take the mountaineering highway with the help of fixed ropes. Or you may decide to go straight up a rock face in true alpine style spending three nights in a hammock suspended on a vertical rock face with the help of what eco-sensitive mountaineers call ‘friends’ - a device which does not cause damage to the rocks! To do this, you need to master
the climbing techniques and be a bit crazy.
