Andaman
The Andaman group of islands consists of nearly 184 islands, 65 islets and 189 rocks, stretching across about 600 km. The main part of the landmass consists of five main groups of islands, separated from each other by narrow straits. These are – North Andaman, Middle Andaman, South Andaman, Baratang and Rutland. They are collectively known as the “Great Andamans” and are garlanded by many smaller islands, forming a gentle crescent.
Little Andaman, North Sentinel, Narcondam and the Barren Islands are some of the islands fringing the Great Andamans. The Narcondam and Barren islands are volcanic islands.
Only some islands are open for tourists. These are South Andaman Island, Middle Andaman Island, Little Andaman Island, Neil Island, Havelock Island, Long Island, Diglipur (the only island open for visit in North Andaman), Baratang, Islands in the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park (excluding Boat, Holiday, Twin, Tarmugli, Malay and Pluto Islands). Further permission is required to take a night halt at the park.
Day long excursions to the following islands are also allowed – Ross Island, Narcondum Island, Interview Island, Brother Island, Sister Island and Barren Island (where you are not allowed to disembark from the vessel).
